When I asked what color he wanted it, he said “Black, let’s torch it.” So we burned it with a weedburner, brushed it off with a blue nyalox drill brush, I had nicely prepped a piece of Cypress with a plane. This is a simple project of making a live edge shelf for my son. I pulled it out and found an old 24oz ball peen hammer. On one of my early walks with the dog, I saw a wood handle in sticking out from brush at the base of a utility pole. Convert Ball Peen to Straight Peen Hammer.I’m getting older and don’t stoop so good anymore. They are also low, so I have to stoop to see in the forge. They are wood, so they have a tendency to burn. We’ve been doing a bit more blacksmithing and the arrangement of the forge on my sawbenches has always been a bit troublesome. I work with a lot of irregular wood with rough saw marks and things that would spell the end for the fragile lead on a mechanical I know a lot of people disrespect the mechanical pencil for the wood-shop because the lead is too thin and breaks too easily. As a result I have a bunch of these small packs of bits that are incomplete sets. Anything over 1/4″ I don’t go through that rapidly, but anything under 1/4″ they are prone to breakage or other tip damage. I tried putting chairs there, but they are too comfortable and I settle too long. When I have been planing or sawing and worked up a sweat, I’d like to be able sit and rest while my heart settles down. I have a nice tiny patio outside the front door of my workshop. Simple and pretty quick to build, but I enjoy the look of it. Normally I’d use pure Tung oil, but I did not want the oil near the candles. Then we sprayed it with a few coats spray shellac. When the glue set up, I used a forstner bit to drill three spots for some tea lights. We glued the three pieces together and put it in a couple of clamps. The cypress was hand planed (offcuts from a previous project) so no sanding needed. Then traced the template onto the cypress pieces and cut the shape on the bandsaw. I made a heart template by folding a piece of paper in half and cutting it, the same way you’d make a valentines card. We repeated this a few times until the texture of the wood started to emerge. My son’s first time at the bandsaw using a miter guide.įor the color we used a bernzomatic propane torch to make it dark and brushed off the loose stuff. It was much harder and more dense than the cypress but was not anything I could identify. I had two pieces of cypress and a scrap of something that I think came off a pallet. I also wanted the middle layer to protrude from the ends by maybe a 1/4″ to add some visual interest at the edges. I wanted the middle layer to be dark and show through a heart cutout on each of the outer layers. I came up with the idea for a candle holder made from three pieces of wood laminated together. Some of my projects are kind of big and he loses interest, so I was looking for something small. Back in February 2020 I was looking for a small fast project to make with my son.
